Our original experience came from organizing and leading specialist tours for private travel programs to China in the late 1990s. Mainstream Chinese tourism has been tightly controlled by government bodies ever since the country began opening up. The result is a well-trodden path of sites, hotels, and restaurants designated to tourism. The majority of groups are still packaged and processed through this machinery which has changed little in 30 years. China on the other hand has transformed beyond all recognition.
