From the Ming through the Qing dynasties (1368-1911) Lijiang experienced an economic and religious renaissance. This is clearly recorded by a collection of fifty five temple frescos northwest of the old town. The most famous are the murals of the Dabaoji (Great Treasure) Palace and the Colored Glaze Temple, both in the town of Baisha. Renowned artists converged from different regions including Taoists from the central plains, Tibetans, Chinese, and of course the local Naxi Dongba. They are unique in content as they contain Buddhist, Taoist and Naxi Dongba shamanist iconography. Detailed imagery presents both religious and every day scenes providing great insight into the social fabric of the period.
